Everything You Need To Know About Exfoliation

Everything You Need To Know About Exfoliation

“I’m a big believer in that if you focus on good skin care, you really won’t need a lot of makeup"

 - Demi Moore

Contour this, foundation that, highlight pack, bronzer, concealer, primer, setting powder, eyelash curler, eyebrow pencils, and a whole lot of make up remover. And repeat.

No wonder you don't like to wash your face before bed!

Does this sound like you? If so, you need to exfoliate. Check out these FAQs.

1. What exactly is exfoliation?

Exfoliation is the general term for the process that removes dead skin cells.

2. What happens?

Exfoliants gently remove built-up dead skin for smoother, noticeably renewed skin.

3. Who is exfoliating for?

It's for everyone! Whether you love spending hours on your makeup, or you're a mascara and chapstick kind of girl, exfoliating your face and body regularly will help to prep your skin and keep it in its best condition, no matter what your preference is.

Caring for your skin should NOT be optional; it's a necessity! When your skin is fresh and glowing with good health, your makeup will look 1000 times better (because of your gorgeous skin). You'll even become less reliant on it to cover things up (because there won't be anything to cover up, duh).

4. What are the benefits?

Exfoliation is one of the most important aspects of skin care and can drastically change your skin's appearance over time. It is a process that is meant to support your daily skincare routine.

In our opinion, exfoliating is just as important as brushing your teeth.

Environmental damage causes the surface of the skin to become dull, rough, and uneven. Exfoliating eliminates this build up, which otherwise would cause clogged pores, uneven skin tone, acne and large pimples, and worsen the appearance of fine lines and deeper wrinkles.

Exfoliating will:

  • unclog pores
  • minimize redness
  • diminish the look of wrinkles and age spots
  • hydrate your skin
  • visibly improve uneven skin tones

5. Other benefits:

Exfoliating is one of the only skin routines that leaves the skin noticeably smoother after just ONE application. It is also great for people with dry skin as it allows better moisture penetration (meaning you won't have to apply as much moisturizer).

6. How often you should exfoliate?

That depends on your #skincaregoals!

If you just want to smooth out rough skin, weekly exfoliating is a great place to start. If you have more ambitious goals, like wrinkle or scar reduction, you will probably end up exfoliating three times a week.

7. How long will it take before I see results?

If you are looking for real change, it will take months.  You aren’t just changing how you skin looks; you are actually changing how it is. It needs time to grow into its better self. Going slow will produce better results than doing too much too fast and actually damaging your skin.

Start off with once a week, and slowly work your way up.

8.The aftermath

You'll feel confident in your skin, no makeup required! Your body will feel soft, moisturized, and glowy, and you'll soon start to get compliments on your skin. Add a little mascara and some lipgloss, and you'll be good to go.

Scrub So Safe, You Can Eat It

Scrub So Safe, You Can Eat It

We all know what we use on our skin ends up inside our bodies. So when you're out buying products, it's important to either...

Nicki Palmer

1. Buy a magnifying glass and read the fine print of the ingredient list and then Google each ingredient.

OR

2. Buy products with fewer ingredients that you actually recognize!

If the products you use contain harmful ingredients such as toxic chemicals, colours, and fragrances, those ingredients make their way into your body, your blood and lymphatic system.

If your skin is as sensitive as mine, it’ll quickly show you it does NOT like chemicals! Insert red dot here, here and here…

-Founder, Estelle Doiron.

Side note: Estelle does not even buy body lotion with fragrances because her skin is so sensitive.

Koffee Organics body scrubs are made of certified organic food ingredients – So safe you could eat it, or casually swallow it while you're in the shower. We won't judge you.

But what does it take for food to be considered “certified”?

If you can spot the "USDA Organic" or even "Certified Organic" seal on the label of your food item or product, the item must have an ingredient list and the contents should be 95% or more certified organic. This means free of synthetic additives like pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and dyes.

On top of this, the items must not be processed using industrial solvents, irradiation, or genetic engineering, according to the USDA. The remaining 5% may only be foods, or processed with additives on an approved list.

"Certified Organic" isn't the only label you'll see though. You may also see "100% organic," which means all of the ingredients must meet the guidelines above.

You may also spot labels that say "made with organic," which means that the ingredients must contain 70% or more organic ingredients. In this case, the USDA seal cannot be used anywhere on the package, and the remaining 30% could contain ingredients on the list of items not certified or natural

#SCRUBADUBDUB!!!

Skin is the LARGEST organ in your body, and is extremely porous and absorbs whatever you put on it. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health looked into the skin's absorption rates of chemicals found in drinking water. It showed that the skin absorbed an average of 64% of total contaminant dosage.

(That's why we use only the best organic ingredients, so your skin absorbs the good stuff!)

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Coconut Oil

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a multi-use, magic-like oil with hundreds of health benefits. We wanted to give you the top reasons as to why you should be using coconut oil.

Not all coconut oil is the same. In order to enjoy its amazing benefits, then you must get organic, virgin coconut oil, not the refined stuff!

1. One tall skinny vanilla latte please, hold the pumpkin scone

One interesting feature of coconut oil is that it can reduce your hunger. This is related to the way the fatty acids are metabolized, because ketones can have an appetite reducing effect.

Add a little coconut oil to your smoothies, coffee, or even in your frying pan to gain its hunger suppressing benefits (and a delightful flavour!)

Fun fact: Almost 50% of the fatty acids in coconut oil is lauric acid. When digested, it can kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungi.

2. Pass the moisturizer- I mean coconut oil!

Many people are using coconut oil for cosmetic purposes and to improve the health and appearance of their skin and hair. When applied on dry skin, coconut oil can improve the moisture and fat content of skin. Coconut oil can also be very protective against hair damage and as a low UV sunscreen, blocking about 20% of the sun's ultraviolet rays

Coconut oil, is one of the few truly rich sources of lauric acid. Lauric acid is rare in nature so you won't be getting it from any other oils in your favourite facial products. It’s been found to boost antioxidant content in the skin and help wounds heal faster. The compounds found in our beloved coconut oil help prevent sun and age related damage to skin.

3. Say goodbye to nasty skin conditions

As mentioned above, coconut oil is highly useful as a topical moisturizer due to its hydrating abilities. In addition to fighting the dryness of the skin, coconut oil can also be used as an aid in treating skin infection like atopic dermatitis (eczema!) You may not know this, but your skin cells actually contain fatty acids, just like most other cells in your body.

4. Repair and prevent damage to your hair

Coconut oil is also known to prevent combing damage. When compared to various other oils such as sunflower oil and mineral oil, coconut oil had a substantially greater impact on reducing protein loss in hair. The reasoning behind this lies in the oil’s structure. After shampooing, apply coconut oil to your hair and put it up in a bun for 10-15 minutes, or keep it in overnight! Rinse it off in the morning and your hair will feel like silk.

5. Your skin will go back in time

The special fatty acids in coconut oil naturally balance saturated to unsaturated fatty acids levels in the skin. Because of this, the skin can heal and repair itself better to prevent wrinkles and sun damage caused by sun exposure. Additionally, coconut oil has been shown to stimulate collagen production and replacement. Instead of attempting to mask or dry up wrinkles on the face, the collagen production stimulated by coconut oil connects and strengthens tissues, leading to tighter, more youthful looking skin.

5 Awesome Benefits Of Using Coffee On Your Skin

5 Awesome Benefits Of Using Coffee On Your Skin

Believe it or not, coffee is a must-have accessory. Even if you’re not a coffee drinker, it can make for a quick and easy remedy that actually solves common skin conditions. Caffeine works as a diuretic, aids in blood circulation, and is also a powerful antioxidant that can perk up your skin.

Here are 5 benefits of using coffee on your skin:

Coffee scrub in shower

1. It boosts collagen and brings back your youthful looking skin

As we age, collagen production slows, and existing collagen sometimes gets damaged by sun exposure or “not so top notch” skin habits.

Caffeic acid found in coffee is known to increase collagen production. What’s hot about that? Collagen is a protein produced by our cells that helps hold skin together creating firm, younger looking skin with added elasticity.

2. Say bye bye to bags & dark circles

“You look tired today."

"...Thanks?"

Brain says you’re awake but dark under-eye circles say different. They can be caused by many things including lack of sleep, dehydration, allergies or even genetics; making you look older and tired.

Applying caffeine under your eyes will reduce the puffiness and inflammation associated with dark circles. Caffeine constricts blood vessels and balances out skin tone.

3. Ditch the dimples to minimize the appearance of cellulite

Behold coffee's diuretic properties! Diuretics increase the excretion of water from bodies, which works by dehydrating skin and fat cells. Applying coffee to targeted areas draws fluid away and  shrinks the cells. This leads to  improved blood circulation and a tighter, more toned complexion.

Coffee’s antioxidants also helps getting rid of toxins, which can improve your skin's’ health and reduce the dimpled look.

4. Prevents clogged pores

Coffee’s acidity helps to boost the skin’s protective barrier, which gives you a glowing look. Regular use of coffee on your skin can help brighten your skin to give it a more radiant complexion, all while preventing clogged pores.
